Assistant Vice President, Alumni Relations & Development

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the incumbent will serve on the Institutional Advancement senior management team. This individual will provide strategic vision and leadership to UMBC's alumni relations programs and annual giving initiatives directed at engaging the university's 62,000 plus alumni. While leading a talented and committed team of individuals, the incumbent will also collaborate with academic leadership to develop an institutional culture that encourages and nurtures the development of life-long ties between UMBC and alumni. Specific duties include: directing a program of alumni relations, annual giving, and major gifts, including building meaningful and realistic goals for these programs; managing teams in the identification and execution of alumni relations and development strategies to accomplish and surpass these goals; maintaining a personal portfolio of alumni donors and prospects; hiring, developing, and motivating a development staff in their pursuit of institutional and professional goals; collaborating with key academic leaders to support meaningful prospect identification, cultivation, and proposal development; cultivating and growing a core group of alumni volunteers to support the institution's fundraising goals; effectively partnering with divisional leadership and peers in marketing and public relations, advancement communications, advancement services, etc., to achieve divisional and institutional goals; and performing other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Requires a Bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred). Minimum of five years of experience as a development professional preferably in a college/university setting, or in an organization similar in size, scale, and complexity to a public research university required. Must have a minimum of three years of supervisory/management experience with demonstrated ability to hire, train, supervise, motivate, and lead professional teams. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills are crucial, as is the ability to understand and synthesize institutional values, goals, strengths, and programs to a diverse range of constituencies. Must be able to demonstrate a strong record of achievement in alumni relations/membership development, volunteer management and board relations, and communications. The ability to understand the interplay of alumni relations and annual giving development, and have demonstrated experience with cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts of $10,000 is essential. An energetic and dynamic leader, inspired by the opportunity to develop and grow a highly-promising alumni relations and alumni giving program at one of the nation's most exciting young institutions is strongly desired. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial university environment and will have an affinity for maintaining a broad portfolio of projects and responsibilities.
